You see, I am a preservationist by heart and don't particularly believe in closing an archive to a select few but of course I do understand that there are bills to pay for the project to stay on its' feet but what I am most interested in is coming to terms with what your future goals in terms of eventually making the archive public. BetaArchive's goals are its own and I respect them, whether I agree or not is obviously irrelevant to your goals and aims. So far, I get the sense, correct me if I am wrong, that users are willing to upload to your FTP server as an incentive for access to the same server for the privilege of downloading. I hope you can understand and perhaps you can help me understand the aims and goals of this site. I am on the fence right now and here's why. Thank you for the additional information. You can check the Complete Guide in the mrpije's signature: D The point of using MDF is that it copies every single track that is stored in the disk, even when they're hidden (useful on copy-protected disks).

There's a reason why we want MDF dumps, and we will allow ISO only for a single reason: If the publisher originally released it as such (like Microsoft for example). And for those that still argue and thinks ISOs are the best ever: I am guessing you're still storing all your photos in gif and pcx? DMGs are equally as bad, but at least it has built in checksums, but I still prefer MDF dumps. ISO is inferior in every way and not suitable for archiving. We've covered this several times on the forum already.

What is the technical justification for refusing ISOs?Īlso, if you could also address the other question I had which didn't yet enjoy a reply:Īfter understanding what I should upload how would your team conclude that I should gain FTP access as the login credentials I assume are for an upload account that any user could gain access to. Why the policy against ISOs? These are cross compatible and useable on almost any system. If DMGs are acceptable that's fine by me.
